Old Picture Pages

For me old picture pages are another interesting reality check. What was I doing then? More important: how was i seeing a single topic? How did I convey the subject? Would the theme carry through if the words were left out? Are there close-ups, overalls, strong graphic design, is there a dominant image, are the picture shapes varied, will the design of the page bring the reader into the story? The top left was an A/P picture story, a feature they used to offer newspaper subscribers in the days before digital imagery. They woyld actually print up a page and ship it rolled up in a tube to the subscribers. This was a story about a football coach at a deaf school. The othere two on the top were designed by someone at the Chicago Tribune. They were part of a travel package on a trip to Alaska. The bottol left was a page I shot and laid out about life in prison. The two on the bottom right were a package on lowriders in our community. How well do these pages fit the criteria above? How much has picture journalism changed today? You be the judge.
