A PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC PERSPECTIVE
Small Town Sports
Some people think it's easier to shoot good sports pictures in a big city with professional sports teams. In fact, access is usually limited, space must be shared with numerous other photographers, and deadlines are much harder to meet since travel time can be a factor. If you want to practice shooting sports there is nothing better than a small town, a place where you can get out into the rodeo arena or wander the sidelines at a soccer or football game. You can often get more emotion at a YAFL football game than at the NFL on any given Sunday. A long lense (300-to-500mm) and a fast shutter speed (1/1000) are a good start, although not always required. Then look for the right angle, watch your backround and anticipate the action.
